What's New?

6-17-09 Trek Across Maine Celebrates 25 Years and Fun Facts.

5-1-09  Governor signs bill making common areas of Maine's state parks and beaches smokefree.

4-2-09  US House of Representatives takes historic vote and passes bill that would give the FDA authority to regulate tobacco. Read a statement released from the American Lung Association.

3-11-09 Lung Association cited in letter to President ObamaAs part of our Smokefree Challenge, last October the Lung Association launched a petition asking President Obama to issue an executive order making all federal workplaces smokefree.  Presently, there are exemptions in federal workplace rules, which leave federal workers exposed to secondhand smoke – even if they live in a state that has a comprehensive smokefree law.

In December, the General Services Administration (GSA) which is the landlord for about 30 percent of all federal buildings, declared that all GSA workplaces will become smokefree this year.  This is an important first step, but it still leaves many federal employees who may be exposed to secondhand smoke while at work.

In the last month, we worked with Rep. Susan Davis of California on a letter to President Obama, asking President Obama to issue an executive order making all federal workplaces smokefree. Attached please find the letter signed by Rep. Davis and 18 other Members of Congress that went to the President last week. The letter, which cites the Lung Association, includes the signatures of some of the most powerful Members of the House of Representatives.

We will continue to keep you posted on these activities.  Read the letter to President Obama.

3-5-09   We’re one step closer to the FDA regulation of tobacco.  This is a tremendous win for the American Lung Association.  On March 4th, the House of Representatives' Committee on Energy & Commerce voted to send the FDA tobacco legislation (HR 1256) to the full House for consideration.  The final committee vote was 39 to 13.  There was strong bipartisan support -- all Committee Democrats plus 6 Committee Republicans -- voted for final passage.
